Too
Toxic to Trash!
There
are many beneficial products we use in our homes everyday.
Some of these products however can be hazardous if they
are disposed of improperly. These products are called
Household Hazardous Waste (HHW). Household Hazardous
Waste is any product, labeled or not, that is toxic,
poisonous, corrosive, flammable, combustible or irritant
that is disposed of. A typical home can contain a large
number of potential household hazardous waste products
used for cleaning, painting, beautifying, lubricating
and disinfecting the house, yard,
workshop, or garage.
Typical
HHW product categories include:
- Lawn
/ Garden-Care Products - Fertilizers, pesticides,
and weed killers.
- Paint
and Paint-Related Products - Paints, varnishes & stains,
solvents.
- Automotive
Fluids and Batteries - Oil, antifreeze, brake & transmission
fluids, & gasoline
- Beauty
Products & Medicines - Hair relaxers, dyes & permanents,
polish remover, expired medication and sharps (injection
needles and lancets)
- Household
Cleaners - Over & drain cleaners, bleach & ammonia
based products
- Miscellaneous
- Fluorescent lights, photo chemicals, mercury thermometers
& batteries
To
dispose of these types of materials you can either attend
one of the regular HHW Round Up events held at various
locations throughout the County nearly every weekend,
or bring them to one of the new permanent HHW collection
centers that are now open every weekend.
